The residence
Altadore is where Calgary goes for the river, the parks and Marda Loop within reach of the front door, and this tree-lined block of 49 Avenue sits at its quiet southern edge, a short walk from Glenmore Athletic Park. A custom-built infill with coffered ceilings, a Viking and Miele kitchen, a skylit third-floor loft and a back yard made for evenings around the outdoor fireplace.
On a quiet, tree-lined stretch of 49 Avenue, a short walk from Glenmore Athletic Park, this custom-built Altadore infill offers more than 3,000 sq ft of finished living space across four levels. Designed by Creative Innovations & Designs and refreshed by Meagan Grey Interiors, it pairs a stone-and-stucco façade with insulated concrete form (ICF) construction on the upper-level party walls.
Inside, 9-foot ceilings, engineered hardwood and custom built-ins set the tone. A formal dining room sits beneath a coffered ceiling, and the living room gathers around a gas fireplace. The kitchen is built for cooking and hosting alike, with custom cabinetry, granite counters, an oversized island, a walk-in pantry and Viking and Miele appliances.
Upstairs, the primary suite has a walk-in closet and an ensuite with heated floors, a soaker tub, a glass shower and a double vanity. Two more bedrooms, a full bath and upper-floor laundry complete the level, and a third-floor loft under a skylight makes a bright flex space for an office, playroom or reading nook.
The finished lower level adds a recreation room with a wet bar, a fourth bedroom and a full bathroom. Out back, a full-width deck with a gas BBQ hookup steps down to a patio with an outdoor gas fireplace, framed by established gardens. An oversized double detached garage with heat and 220V wiring sits off the lane.
Thoughtful upgrades run throughout: air conditioning on the upper two floors, heated mudroom floors, Hunter Douglas blinds, Control4 home automation and battery-backed sump pumps. Sandy Beach, the river pathways, Altadore's schools and the shops of Marda Loop are all close by, and downtown is an easy commute.

Worth knowing
The land was annexed in 1910 but Altadore was only established in 1945, which is why the original housing stock is mid-century bungalows rather than the 1910s character homes across the river.
Few communities have rebuilt themselves faster. Most of those bungalows have given way to semi-detached and detached infills over the past twenty years, so the streets keep getting newer while the trees stay old.
The Marda Theatre opened on 33 Avenue in the 1950s, and the "Loop" was the streetcar turnaround at the end of the line. The district still carries the name.
CFB Calgary closed in 1998 and its Currie Barracks and married quarters became Garrison Woods and Currie, which is why the west side of Altadore has such a walkable, new-urbanist feel.
The long escarpment park at the east edge of the community is one of the largest off-leash areas in the city, with downtown views from the top.
Sandy Beach sits on the Elbow River below River Park, with a pedestrian bridge across to Elbow Park and Britannia on the other side.
Altadore School (K–6) sits at 16 Street and 45 Avenue, and Dr. Oakley School serves K–6 in Marda Loop, with Central Memorial High School just south.
Glenmore Athletic Park, the Glenmore Aquatic Centre and the reservoir pathways sit just south of 50 Avenue, with the Weaselhead natural area and the sailing clubs beyond.
The City's Marda Loop Main Streets project reworked 33 and 34 Avenues with wider sidewalks, patios and street trees, so the high street is only now settling into its new form.
The Marda Loop Communities Association, which serves Altadore and South Calgary, runs Marda Gras each summer, when 33 Avenue closes to cars and fills with music and food.

A leafy inner-city grid between the Elbow River escarpment and the shops of Marda Loop, Altadore has quietly become one of the most sought-after family neighbourhoods on Calgary's west side, with mature trees, wide avenues, and a housing stock that has been rebuilt street by street.
From this block of 49 Avenue, Glenmore Athletic Park and the aquatic centre are just to the south, Sandy Beach and River Park are a short walk east, Altadore School is close by, and 33 Avenue in Marda Loop, with its cafes, restaurants and Safeway, is a few minutes north. Downtown is about fifteen minutes by car or by the 14 Street bike lanes.
